ANCHORAGE — As the Colony Knights prepared to head into the 2011 state tournament, head coach Mike Stewart believed Railbelt Conference rival Lathrop was among the top teams in the field.
With that said, Stewart and the Knights were probably a bit bummed to see the Malemutes in the elimination round.
Lathrop ended Colony’s season with a 5-0 win over the Knights during the first round of consolation action in the ASAA/First National Bank Large Schools State Softball Championships at Cartee Fields in Anchorage Friday afternoon.
Colony, the No. 4 seed from the Railbelt, opened play with a 7-0 loss to Dimond Friday morning. The Lynx were the top seed from the Cook Inlet Conference.
Lathrop was eliminated from play late Friday with a 2-1 loss to Interior rival West Valley.
The Wolfpack was the lone Railbelt team to make it out of the first day of the two-day championships. Defending state champion Juneau-Douglas, the Railbelt’s top seed, also finished 0-2 on Friday.
West Anchorage used a 3-2 win over Dimond to win the state title. Sitka won the small schools title with an 8-0 with over Homer.
