The illegal dump-site cleanup in Sutton shows how a community can partner with businesses to bring about change and what some might consider an impossible task. Thanks to Usibelli Coal Mine, Cruz Construction and NC Machinery are in order. They donated money and resources and partnered with the community to clean up close to 150,000 pounds of garbage that had been dumped there for decades. Other groups involved were the Alaska Extreme Fourwheelers Club, the Alaska National Guard, Chickaloon Village Traditional Council and the Sutton Community Council.
Dave Cruz brought his expertise, equipment and a work force to build a trail into the area. The Cruz team and volunteers worked tirelessly loading burned out cars and garbage into containers.
Thanks to George Rauscher and his relentless efforts, the cleanup cost nothing to the borough or the state. Working for three months on this project, Mr. Rauscher was able to bring together business, government, and the community to make a real difference — all without any impact on taxpayers. Thank you, George Rauscher, for dedication to making the Mat-Su a better place to live.
Also instrumental in this effort was Sutton resident and Assemblywoman Lynne Woods. Cleaning up the illegal dump site in Sutton is a great example of businesses partnering with the community and we look forward to seeing this type of effort continue.
