WASILLA -- A new year at Burchell High School brings with it a brand new computer lab and 24 brand new Dell computers. After about four months, and with the help from grants and money put aside from the bond for the new expansion, the new technology lab at Burchell High is open to the staff and students.
An estimated $45,000 was spent to provide the students this required technology lab. Many teachers say it's a great addition to the school. "With better resources students are more likely to use it," said Scott Warren, the assistant principal at Burchell. Warren also said there are plans to implement a wireless network around the school so computers can be transported between classes.
With faster access the new computers give the students of Burchell High more access to information and more options for class work. "The best thing about the new lab is that it gives new technology for students to learn and utilize," Warren said.
Planned since 2000, the construction started near the end of last school year. "It's just the beginning of the new age of technical education," said Lee Seagondollar, the technical adviser for Burchell High. "The best thing, in my opinion, is that it gives students better access to learning the Internet and other useful skills."
It seems the lab has everything, but there may still be room for improvement.
"We need a full-time computer skills instructor some time in the future," Seagondollar said.
The new Dell Optiplex computers, picked by Mat-Su district network specialist Ted Tansill, were picked because the brand suits the needs of the school, is great for expansion and the systems are three times faster than the old computers, according to Seagondollar. The old computers have been placed in other classrooms around the school.
Even though there are a few bugs to be worked out, the lab is running great, according to Warren.
With unlimited research opportunities both students and staff are very excited about this lab.
