Landfill rate increase spells trouble

To the editor:

Today I got a pretty big shock at the Big Lake landfill. A reasonable load cost me $55 after the landfill coupon had been applied! Stopping at a nearby store, I mentioned to others in line about just leaving the dump and my shock at the price. Some were aware of people already burning inappropriate materials because of the incredible increase. Also mentioned was the worry that people are going to just start dumping their garbage in deserted areas instead, possibly causing the pollution of aquifers and maybe attracting bears.

Also, I was given a printout of the new rates. You are only allowed a limit of two, 33-gallon bags or cans per day, per customer. What?! I live a ways away, so if I want to pay the $3 for an extra can, too bad. Come back tomorrow?

I don’t know whose brilliant idea this was, but I do know you don’t keep an area clean by making it too expensive to use legitimate disposal means.
