Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Larry R. Bates, 54, died Jan. 14, 2002, at Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania. Funeral services were held in York, Pa.
Mr. Bates was born Nov. 7, 1947, in York. He was the son of Earl Bates and the late Mae Bates. He was a lineman leader for Met-Ed/GPU electric company. He was also an Army veteran of Vietnam, serving in the military police. He was a member of the Ninth Ward Social Club, Shiloh American Legion Post No. 799 and the Thirteenth Ward Political Club.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Nancy Bates; father and step-mother, Earl and Mary Bates, of York, Pa.; sons, Roy Bates and Jeff Bates, both of Florida; step-daughter, Zondra Miller, of York; step-sons, Ted Yingling and Ronald Yingling, of York; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Susan Yeager, Betty Wood, Cindy Carbaugh, all of Chambersburg, Franklin County, and Kelly Porter, of Palmer; brothers, Howard Martin Jr., of Lynchburg, Va., Roy Martin, of Arvonia, Va. and Harry Martin, of Chambersburg. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
