Late efforts earn pair of Warriors top-5 finishes

ANCHORAGE — As runners closed in on the midway point of the 4A girls race, Wasilla freshman Alex Mathis stood in third place, on the shoulder of Thunder Mountain’s Maddie Hall. Heading into the 4-kilometer mark, senior Mariah Burroughs was in seventh, mere seconds behind a pair of runners.

But neither would be denied a better finish.

Mathis concluded her freshman season with a runner-up finish and Burroughs capped a stellar four-year varsity run with a career-best fifth-place finish at state to help the Wasilla Warriors finish third in the girls’ team standings at the ASAA/First National Bank State Cross-Country Running Championships at Bartlett High School Saturday.

In the end, only defending state champion Allie Ostrander could top Mathis. Ostrander won her second straight title with a time of 17 minutes, 50 seconds. Mathis, who finished in the top 3 of every 5-K she competed in as a freshman, was second at 18:58.

“I got exactly what I wanted,” Mathis said after the meet.

Wasilla head coach Leslie Varys said she was excited to see her young runner beat a Thunder Mountain junior who hasn’t been seen by most Southcentral Alaska teams.

“I think she just thrives in this environment, where she can be challenged,” Varys said of Mathis. “It’s been really great to see her grow as a team member, and not just as an individual athlete to see her become one of the girls.”

Mathis said Hall was a strong runner.

“She definitely pushed me a lot,” Mathis said. “It was really competitive up until the last K. I started gaining, and I just wanted to try to keep that lead.”

Burroughs, who has finished in the top 11 in state in each of her four years with the Warriors, needed a late push to post a career best. At the fourth kilometer, Burroughs trailed South’s Morgan Lash and Lathrop’s Brooke Lizotte by only four seconds. But she passed both runners. She also sprinted to the finish line just ahead of three other runners to claim fifth place.

Burroughs and the ninth-place finisher were separated by only four seconds.

“I’m extremely happy I caught the two girls at the end. No matter what happens, I don’t have to blame myself. I knew I did whatever I could,” said Burroughs, who finished with her best time of the season.

A notable piece of the Bartlett course is an uphill stretch toward the end of the race known to be brutal to runners. That’s where Burroughs said she gained her ground.

“For me it’s the hills. You power up those babies,” Burroughs said. “I was thinking, ‘I’m not going to let them catch me.’”

Wasilla, which entered the event as the three-time defending state champion, placed two in the top 5, three in the top 30 and four in the top 40 en route to the third-place finish. Wasilla had 111 points in the team standings. West placed three in the top 12 and won the title with 56 points. Soldotna was second with 90 points.

The Warriors, who won their fourth straight Region III title last week, were hoping to capture another four-peat, but Varys was happy with the work of her team.

“I’m always really proud of them regardless of what the numbers are, or the team standings or time,” Varys said. “I know they’re going to give it 100 percent all of the time. Whatever they had today is what they gave.”

Mathis was just one of the Valley freshmen who notched impressive performances in the 4A girls race. Palmer’s Ruby Woodings, also a ninth-grader, finished 14th with a time of 19:45. She moved up 10 spots during the final kilometer of the race. Woodings broke the 20-minute mark for the first time of her career in the race.

Colony also placed a pair of freshmen in the top 25. Cathelyne Powers (19:50) was 18th and Elisabeth Bowker (20:05) finished 25th.

Colony’s Brandon Schafer led the Valley boys with a 15th-place finish in the 4A race, boasting a time of 16:44. Shafer set a personal record with the time.

Fellow Colony senior Lyon Kopsack also posted a season-best time, finishing 20th with a mark of 16:54. Senior Boaz Sessome finished 38th for the Knights.

Hayden Foster (17:48) led Palmer and Lane Reed posted a time of 18:11 for Wasilla in the boys race.

In the 123A boys race, Houston’s Andrew Spencer (17:44) finished 21st.
