Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Laurence Riley Davis, Jr., 69,of Sutton, passed away June 4 at Mat-Su Regional Hospital, Palmer. A memorial celebration of life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Sutton Bible Church 15772 N. Glenn Hwy. Sutton, Alaska. Mr. Davis was born on July 29, 1948 at Sibley, Iowa to Viola and Laurence Davis, Sr. He attended school in Sandpoint, Idaho; graduating from Sandpoint Senior High School in 1966. On Oct. 20, 1968; he married Evelyn Doughty in Sandpoint. They were looking forward to celebrating their Golden Anniversary later this year. He and his family moved to Alaska in April of 1983 and saw his dream come true in 1987 when they moved to a remote homestead. He held a variety of jobs over his lifetime. He retired from the Green’s Creek Mine in 2006. Upon his retirement he moved to Willow, then to Sutton where he pastored the church now known as Sutton Bible Church until he stepped down due to health problems. He volunteered as a missionary team member, helping to build churches and church camps throughout Alaska and as a mentor with the TLC program at Palmer Correctional Center. He said the most rewarding thing he ever did was working for the Lord and sharing the Word of the Lord Jesus Christ where ever life took him. He enjoyed working on machines, especially vehicles, and continued to instruct on how to repair them even after he could no longer physically do the work himself. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, his daughter Eva (Doug) Holeman of Amarillo, Texas, his 2 sons, James Davis of Ontario, Oregon and Brian (Karen) Davis of Houston, Alaska, 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, his mother, Viola Davis- Greenland, 1 sister, Lorraine Davis, 2 brothers, John (Velda) Davis, and Bob (Beverly) Davis, nieces, nephews, many friends, and his church family. He was preceded in death by his father, Laurence Sr. In Lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Sutton Bible Church with “Food Pantry noted in the memo space.” There will be a fellowship with light refreshments following the service.
