The Palmer High School hockey team was presented a certificate of commendation on behalf of the state Legislature Thursday at Palmer High School.
The 22nd state Legislature honored the team for its exemplary act of community service and outstanding citizenship for cleaning the Soldotna Sports Center during the hockey season.
"The recognition was a big surprise for us," said Palmer coach Brian Fish. "It's good for the kids to get out and do something for the community, improve the image of hockey and be recognized for it."
Between a set of weekend hockey games with Peninsula teams in Soldotna during the season, the team spent their spare time scrubbing black marks caused by pucks and sticksfrom the glass surrounding the ice at the Soldotna Sports Center.
According to Palmer principal Wolfgang Winter, the team's community service work may also garner nominations for other awards.
