Let legislators live our lives once

To the editor:

In discussing the health care options with a wise and wonderfully sensible Mat-Su Valley physician, he offered the most profound, affordable and simple solution to health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security I had ever heard.

“If the only programs available to our legislators were the ones they pass for us, they would be motivated to fix it very quickly. No special retirement plans — make them pay into Social Security like the rest of us. Let the senators come home after work to hear that their wife called 40 doctors before she found one that would accept their insurance and treat their toddler’s ear infection. Their wives would motivate them to fix it before their child got another illness.”

In that same thinking, how many of us have had our hours cut, benefits cut, or ended up on unemployment or became disabled recently? How about taking that same percentage and having a lottery to see which senators and congressmen got their walking papers for a year without pay. Or, require their kids to go to Head Start programs when school starts. Then, perhaps, they would take a deeper interest in our educational system.

While I am at it, if anyone else feels cheated by Workers Comp, please send me a note at alaskasinjuredworkersalliance@livel.com

We’ll have to make some noise to fix it. My voice, alone, just isn’t going to be loud enough.
