LETTER: Beware the Castle Mountain fault

To the editor:

Senator Dunleavy and Assemblyman Kowalke did good work in establishing new fire stations and emergency response.

While forest fire is a serious threat to Mat-Su residents, the greatest danger is the Castle Mountain fault. The fault stretches from the base of Mount Susitna, across the Susitna lowlands, through Houston and eastward north of Wasilla, Palmer and Sutton.

Castle Mountain fault is active, shows surface expression and is capable of a magnitude 7.5 earthquake at an intermediate depth.

I see many new homes built too near the fault, or in some sites, atop the rupture.

In a forest fire, one can flee or fight. In a magnitude 7.5 quake, you will not get to the front door.

The new fire houses are necessary for forest fire and earthquake response.
