To the Editor:
From the time my mom wheeled my dad into the emergency room doors at Mat-Su Regional Hospital to the time my mother and I walked out, the care my dad received was beyond exceptional. The entire staff worked quickly and efficiently to meet the needs of my dad AND my family.
Dr. Shergill is man of great compassion. He waited while we wept, gave us time to understand, spoke to us in words that we could comprehend and was patient while we asked many questions. He was clear in my dad’s prognosis and even though it was a tough message to deliver, he was gentle. When my family left his ICU office it was hugs we received, not handshakes.
The many nurses we encountered were outstanding. The continued care you provided to my dad is beyond words. Nightly baths, daily hygiene, as well as a long list of other duties you had all while telling him stories… you treated him as if he would wake up, get up and walk out of that hospital at any second. When you weren’t caring for him, you were caring for us. I can’t even count how many times we were asked: How are YOU doing? Can we get YOU anything? You made us laugh and hugged us when we cried; never judging our grief process. When my dad’s journey came to an end there were just as many nurses rushing to hug me and care for me as there were at my dad’s bedside. Each and every one of you are the definition of comfort care.
I wish I could buy you all the vacation you deserve; your job is draining. Compassion fatigue, it’s real! Instead, I will publically praise you and thank you endlessly for all the compassion and overall kindness you never stopped showing every member of my family during this incredibly difficult time.
A million thanks,
