LETTER: Important to protect groundwater

To the editor:

Water is essential for life. Thousands of Alaskan homes get their water from private or small community water wells. The water in those wells comes from groundwater - rain and melting snow - that seeps down into the soil. March 11 - 17 is being observed as National Groundwater Awareness Week. It is a time to encourage well owners to test their water and maintain their wells to prevent waterborne illnesses. Things you may dispose of in your yard can potentially seep into the groundwater and contaminate your water. Tend to your well to be sure it is properly sealed and the pump is working correctly. Treat your water if necessary to keep it healthy. There are testing labs throughout the state that can test your water. There are many licensed well drillers and pump installers throughout the state that can help with your maintenance. There are water treatment facilities in Alaska that can help you find the right treatment or filtration system needed. If you are in need of a new well be sure to hire a licensed and bonded contractor. Remember, cheaper isn’t always better. We encourage every person to be a “groundwater advocate” by protecting and conserving groundwater.
