Kevin Burke of Burke's Military and Flags hangs a patriotic wreath on a Mat-Su Veterans' Highway sign near the intersection of Church and Seldon roads in Wasilla on Thursday, May 26, in preparation for Memorial Day weekend. Burke said he started hanging wreaths on the veteran's highway — which includes the Seldon extension in Meadow Lakes, Seldon Road, Bogard Road and the Bogard extension in Palmer — with Tony and Angela Shelton five years ago, when the tradition began. To the editor:

“Some people wonder all their lives if they’ve made a difference. The Marines don’t have that problem.” That quote by President Ronald Reagan can be expanded to include all branches of the U.S. military.

As an Alaskan where we have a huge military presence, and as the widow of a veteran, my feelings toward veterans and active military are strong and proud. I honor you, I cherish you, and I am so grateful for everything you have done and continue to do for our great country. I wish each of you a safe journey and a welcome home.
