A year ago today, 4/9/2017, Wasilla Police K9 “Marshal” died unexpectedly of an aggressive cancer that had unknowingly been growing in him while still performing his duties. All other indications had shown K9 Marshal was otherwise healthy. His productive and successful career was cut short. Although a new WPD K9 Officer and handler are currently in training, it will be more than a year since the loss of K9 Marshal when the new K9 team is in service.
3/26/17, a law enforcement officer was shot and killed in the Wasilla area. During the early morning hours, State Troopers and Wasilla Police pursued a suspect who recklessly endangered the lives of others. It was discovered the suspect had outstanding felony warrants for his arrest. During the pursuit, Troopers disabled the suspect’s car. He then got out and walked away ignoring commands to stop. Upon the first law enforcement officer approaching to make the apprehension, the suspect shot and killed that first officer; K9 “Rico”. Troopers were able to return fire in self-defense stopping the suspect without harm to any other law enforcement officer or citizen.
9/25/16, a suspect led Palmer Police on a pursuit towards Wasilla, risking the lives of others. Troopers assisted Palmer Police with the stop. The suspect, a convicted felon fled on foot carrying a firearm. As law enforcement officers continued the pursuit on foot with K9 “Helo”, the suspect fired all the rounds in his pistol in the direction of the officers. K9 “Helo” was the only officer shot, who later died from his wounds. Law enforcement officers were able to return fire, stopping the suspect without harm to any other officer or citizen.
Our K9 partners don’t ask for much. Police K9’s humbly obey without hesitation, and only ask to be a part of the pack. With loyalty and dedication, a Police K9 will pursue their target and readily give his or her life for our protection.
It is my opinion, influenced by my professional experience, the best tools used by police for stopping crime, catching criminal suspects, finding drugs/ evidence, and protecting lives are the following: high quality professional officers, transportation, information technology, communication, and Police K9’s. Police K9’s Save Lives. Thank you for your support.
