Letter to the Editor

Gratitude for talented, caring staff

I am writing to express my profound gratitude and admiration for the exceptional care I received during a visit last summer to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.

In July 2025, my husband and I were planning to fly back to Oklahoma after visiting our daughter and family in Valdez for the summer.

Unfortunately, on the way from Valdez to Anchorage, I became unresponsive. Upon arrival to the ER, I was barely alive with very little blood pressure. I was admitted to Mat-Su Hospital suffering septic shock and acute kidney injury due to a prolonged burst appendix. It had burst two days prior and I didn’t realize how sick I was for a couple of days. I was given less than 20% chance of surviving. While I did not plan my visit to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, the experience was truly remarkable from start to finish.

From the moment I arrived, every member of the hospital staff, from the emergency room team to the doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff in the Intensive Care Unit and the second floor, demonstrated incredible professionalism and compassion. The nurses, in particular, were like a well-oiled machine, anticipating my needs and providing comfort during a difficult time. Their kindness and encouraging attitudes shown to both myself and my husband were a marvel to behold and greatly contributed to my recovery.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Carl in the ICU, Dr. LeCheminant, Dr. Melendez, Dr. Marzan, Dr. Kamali, Dr. Johanson, Dr. Davignon, Dr. Strohmeyer, Dr. Bobanga, Dr. Augustin. Their expertise and attentive care put me at ease and made me feel like more than just a patient. It is their unwavering dedication that makes Mat-Su Regional Medical Center such an incredible asset to your community.

In an era when the healthcare system often faces criticism, it is important to recognize the countless heroic efforts that go on every day. You are truly fortunate to have such a wonderful facility and a talented, caring staff in your midst. Their tireless work deserves our collective appreciation.
