LETTER: What kind of math is this?

To the editor:

Friday’s edition of the FRONTIERSMAN had a supplement on the Permanent Fund, and at the bottom of page 3, it said, “2014 - The Fund reaches a value of $50 billion.” and “2016 - The Fund celebrates its 40th anniversary with a fund value of $52.8 billion.”

More money than ever divided by about the same number of Alaska residents and the PFD for 2016 was half what it should have been. That makes no sense in what used to be called Arithmetic, and is now called Math. What’s it called now?

On page 1 of this supplement, the beautiful photo of the owl had this second sentence: “The regal snowy owl exhibits calm perseverance as it navigates challenging and novel territory.”

Novel? Now I understand. These Math numbers are fiction. [Is this the New Math?]

Opening each new issue of the FRONTIERSMAN is a reading adventure! I can’t wait to see what I’m going to learn in the next issue!
