Dear Editor,

Anchorage schools are losing dozens more teachers as a result of the state fiscal crisis. That's not the fault of our school district. It's a result of no new revenue and a non-sustainable funding model with the Permanent Fund. The state has already enacted deep cuts. The legislature could lay off every employee in the state and it still wouldn't fix the fiscal crisis. If we are going to save our public school system—and our state's economy—now is the time for legislative action to establish a sustainable budget.

Kevin McGee, president of the Anchorage Branch of the NAACP

I’d like to thank the Anchorage Press for relief from the *fake news alternative fact virus* that has spread across the country and appears immune, for the moment, to preventive vaccination. Your coverage (thank you Zakiya McCummings) on the influence of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Rev Alonzo Patterson and so many unnamed others was fact based inspiration on the power of loving your neighbor as yourself. But love requires action, and the Shiloh network has a fifty year history of healing divides and contributing to our remarkably neighbor friendly community. And thanks, Rev Patterson, for your many years of overtime offering the same love, respect and support to countless prison inmates, regardless of physical distinction.

Former Commissioner Alaska Dept of Corrections
