Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Big Lake resident Lewis V. Sneddon, 84, died of natural causes at his home in Big Lake Nov. 15, 2002. A memorial service was held at Valley Funeral Home, 151 E. Herning Avenue in Wasilla on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. Pastor Charles Welch officiated. Military graveside services and interment will take place at a later date.
Mr. Sneddon was born April 9, 1918, in Salida, Colo. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in the North American Campaign, Normandy attack and German attack.
Mr. Sneddon moved to Alaska in 1945 with his wife Maxine. He had been a resident of Alaska for 52 years, living in Anchorage for 30 years, then moving to Big Lake in the early 1980s where he resided until his death.
Lewis was retired from Alaska Laborers Construction. He had previously worked as a hard rock coal miner in Colorado and at Independence Mine at Hatcher Pass.
Mr. Sneddon was a member of the Catholic faith. Lewis enjoyed cooking, gardening and fishing.
Family and friends recall, "Through the years many people came to know Lewis as a very pleasant and giving person. He was an outstanding member of the community and was always ready to help in any way he could. Lewis was admired for his kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity throughout the community. He will be deeply missed.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife Maxine; by his brothers Clarence Sneddon and Jim Sneddon; and by his sister Dorothy Elliott.
He is survived by his two neices, Jan Richter of Houston, Texas, and Pat Ganteaume of El Tigre, Venezuela; and by many close friends, including his caregiver Lisa MacDonald, the Cooks family, the Welch family, the Eder family and the Bush family.

Funeral arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla.
