To the editor:
My family recently participated in the Imagination Library program at Big Lake Public Library, and loved it!
It was well-attended and a pleasant testament to the commitment our community has made to get children (and their parents) engaged in reading at an early age. Kids — and there were lots of them — moved independently from station to station while experiencing many tactile activities.
My daughter’s personal favorite was using Matchbox cars and ink to make tracks across paper. It was a gentle reminder to all of us parents in attendance that pre-literacy skills come in many forms and certainly should be a regular part of our children’s world well before they head off to school.
From an educational standpoint, there is perhaps nothing more important than getting kids excited about reading, to see themselves as readers and then getting developmentally appropriate books in their hands.
Kudos to everyone involved in the program for doing just that.
