Light the Night Walk event scheduled

September is childhood cancer awareness month, as well as leukemia awareness month. An Anchorage event is being held to help raise money and awareness.

The Light the Night Walk is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. The walk, an annual event, begins at Goose Lake and winds along the scenic Chester Creek/Northern Lights bike trail to Russian Jack Springs Park, and back to Goose Lake. Last year, the event raised $40,000 for research.

Cancer and leukemia strike a large number of Alaskans. A local woman is hoping the Light the Night Walk can help inform people about leukemia and other forms of childhood cancer.

"I want people to be aware of how to help those who have cancer. I want a lot of participants to come and support Light the Night so we can raise funds for leukemia research and also help to provide aid to those suffering from leukemia and lymphoma," said Kelly Marre. "Cancer is a terrible, life-destroying disease. My goal is to help better the lives of people who have cancer by raising funds for patient aid, for research and to help support Alaskan families in any way I can be of service."

All proceeds raised from the Light the Night Walk go to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's five major programs -- research, patient aid, public and professional education and community service.

For information about the Light the Night Walk event, interested people may contact Marre at 373-1528 or the campaign manager, Amy Larsen, at 1-888-345-4572.
