Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Pioneer Alaskan nurse Lillian E. Phillips, 94, passed away Jan. 8, 2005, at the Anchorage Pioneers' Home.
The family will receive visitors at the Witzleben Family Funeral Home, 1707 South Bragaw St., between 4 and 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 13. Mrs. Phillips will then be laid to rest at Angelus Memorial Park in Anchorage.
A memorial service and celebration of Mrs. Phillips' life, with the Rev. Bob Lee officiating, will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 31, at Lazy Mountain Bible Church, Clark-Wolverine Road in Palmer.
Born in Guelph, Ontario to Fred and Emma Scott, she spent many early years in Pennsylvania. In May 1937, as a young, newly registered nurse, she traveled by train, steamship and bush plane to Copper Center, where she lived as a missionary nurse and served as the sole medical resource for that part of the Territory.
On Christmas Eve 1939, she married Walter T. Phillips in Valdez. In 1947, they moved to Palmer to help establish Lazy Mountain Children's Home, where Mrs. Phillips served as nurse. After retirement, she was active at the InterAct Missions Correspondence School and the Lazy Mountain Bible Church.
In 1996, she and her husband moved to the Anchorage Pioneers' Home, where she is remembered for her warm and peaceful demeanor, her ready smile, and her devotion to family and church.
Mr. Phillips continues to live at the Anchorage Pioneers' Home.
Other family members include Walter Jr. and Gail Phillips and their children, Robin Phillips and Kim and Evan Griffith and Mrs. Phillips' new great-grandson Scott Griffith, all of Anchorage; Ruth and Bob Craft of South Bend, Ind., and their children, Matthew Craft of Columbus, Ohio, Rebecca Craft of South Bend, Ind. and Deborah Craft of Chicago and Patty and Gary Folger and their children, Ray Folger, Duane Folger and Amy Folger, all of Fairbanks.
