Tom Lincoln has stepped down as the head coach of the Colony Knight varsity football squad.
Lincoln gave his resignation to Colony activities director Mike Boyd just prior to the school's winter break.
"After the season we had I was a little shocked," Boyd said of Lincoln's resignation. "He is a good coach and we need good young coaches."
Lincoln cited family and the time commitment required for the position as reasons for his resignation.
"He has a young family," Boyd said. "That job requires a great deal of time and he put in that time. You don't get paid for coaching in the summer and he has bills to pay."
"It takes a lot to run a program." Lincoln said. "You have to go year round. As far as stipends go, you give up a month. Plus we run camps. It is hard to find a summer job and coach.
"Plus I would like to spend time with my kids. They are growing and it is important for me to spend time with them."
Though Lincoln only held the varsity head coach position for two seasons, he found immediate success.
Lincoln was named the 2002 Northern Railbelt Conference's Coach of the Year after leading the Knights to postseason.
Colony also shared a piece of the conference title and earned a triumphant victory over the crosstown rival Palmer Moose during the 2002 season.
"We hate to lose him, but I can't say I blame him," Boyd said.
"I would not take back the two years I had," Lincoln said. "I had a talk with my wife and made a decision. It was not an easy decision to make. This is the best thing for me right now.
"I have coached quite a few sports and it is time to get out for a bit. I am certainly not hanging up the whistle."
According to Boyd, he has contacted a potential replacement for Lincoln.
An announcement could be made within the next week.
