HOUSTON - The Anchorage Christian School Lions swept the Houston Hawks Saturday at Houston High School.
The ACS boys team downed Houston 52-35 Saturday, just a week after the Hawks beat ACS on its home court. The Hawks had a shot Saturday, too, but the Lions closed the game with a 23-7 run.
The loss threw a little change into the District 3 tournament plans. The tourney starts Thursday in Seward, but the bracket was not finalized as of press time. Because of the loss, the Hawks dropped into a three-way tie for third place in the standings, and the tie was going to be settled Monday morning, after the Frontiersman went to press.
Jeff Huston led the Hawks with 12 points. The struggling Hawks had only six players score points in the game, and two of those only hit one shot. Billy Cannon had seven, Jameson Fields six and Travis Webb five points for the Hawks. The Lions, however, had three players score in double figures.
The ACS girls team proved just as formidable, as it downed Houston 67-46.
Freshman Linnea Pudwill and senior Stephanie Smith both scored 14 points to lead the Hawks, but it wasnt enough to counter the Lions, who had four double-digit scorers.
Smith went 7-11 from the free-throw line and Pudwill went 4-4, but they were the only two Hawks to attempt free throws.
In nonconference action, the Su Valley girls beat Cornerstone Christian School, which is located in Wasilla, 72-37, while the Su Valley boys team cruised to a 69-22 victory.
Ireta Dehlin scored 14 points, while Danielle Pratt had 12, Margaret Denkewalter 11 and Melissa McNulty 10 for the Rams.
Myra Greeno led Cornerstone with 22 points.
In the boys game, Su Valleys Jeremiah Moore had a game-high 20 points, including 12 in the third quarter, to pace Su Valley.
Ivan Steadman added 12 for the Rams, who enter the 3A/District 3 tournament with a victory.
Cornerstone was held to only six field goals in the game.
Chelsey Greeno led Cornerstone with 15 points, while Levi Fisher accounted for the rest of the scoring with seven points. Part of Greenos total included nine free throws.
