The Colony fifth and sixth grade squad of the Mat-Su Youth Association screamed through their 2002 schedule going 9-0 en route to a state championship.
"The season was pretty flawless with a 9-0 performance," head coach John Paoletti said. "Our team excelled on blocking. It was one of the most important things that led to their accomplishment. They also did well in the tackling drills for their age level."
The team defeated the Hanshew squad from Anchorage 52-6 in the title game.
"Our biggest achievement was going into Anchorage where they have a higher surplus of individuals and win," Paoletti said.
Quarterback Gino Paoletti and wing back Matt Swan were among the offensive leaders for the squad. Swan scored 17 touchdowns during the season, including five in the championship game. Paoletti added 12 touchdowns and also posted 22 sacks from his defensive end position.
Defensive lineman Kale Van Buskirk and Shave Duque combined for 42 sacks on the season.
According to Paoletti, Van Buskirk and Collin Murphy were named team captain by their peers. Rather than having a first and a second team, Paoletti created a team led by each of the captains.
The MYFA organization has continued to grow, with more than 260 players participating this year. The organization has plans to expand to the Houston area also.
Organizers are already busy planning for the 2003 season.
