MAT-SU — Local anglers have another reason to celebrate this weekend.
Wednesday, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game issued an order that opened the Little Susitna River to king salmon fishing beginning Friday at 6 a.m.
According to a press release issued by ADFG, to date, 2,367 king salmon have passed through the Little Susitna weir. The sustainable escapement goal for the fishery was 900-1,800. The improved numbers reversed a decision issued by ADFG June 18. The Little Sustina River has been closed to king salmon fishing since June 20. As of that time, only 19 king salmon had passed through the Little Susitna weir.
The new order to open fishing through July 13 includes a bag and possession limit of one king salmon 20 inches or greater in length. Only unbaited artificial lures are allowed.
