Local artists prepare totems for Valdez building

Above, Alaskan artist Gail Schuster does some touch-up painting on the lips of a beaver on one of the two 25 foot totem poles commissioned by Valdez businessman Larry Reynolds Monday afternoon at her Wolf Country U.S.A. gift shop and artist studio along the Glenn Highway. Schuster along with her husband Werner completed the 25 foot totem poles in about five weeks. Both pine poles have a wolf, a frog, a owl, a beaver, pictured at right, carved into them. They are topped with an eagle and large wings. The poles are being trucked to Valdez and will adorn the front of a recently purchased building Reynolds is renovating in Valdez ROBERT DeBERRY/Frontiersman

Schuster works on the totems Monday afternoon at her Wolf Country U.S.A. gift shop and artist studio along the Glenn Highway.
