Local athlete leads fastpitch softball travel team to win

Local fastpitch softball standout Tiffany Scott helped lead the Snohomish (Wash.) Express under-18 travel team to victory in a recent national softball tournament in Las Vegas recently.

Scott, who helped the Colony High School softball team to its first-ever state tournament victory in early June, scored the winning run for the Express in its 3-2 win over the Arizona Rebels 3-2.

"The experience was great," Scott said, "It felt good to score when we really needed it."

The Express were behind 2-1 when Scott hit a single and advanced to second base.

On the next play, the batter drove in a run and Scott advanced to third. At the same time, the batter attempted to steal second base before the play was over and the catcher tried to throw the runner out. Scott seized the opportunity and raced home scoring putting the Express ahead to stay.

Scott went 2-for-5 in the tournament and started two games.

The Express finished the tournament 2-3 beating the Arizona and the California Legacy, but dropped three games in the 100-degree weather.

"We really beat ourselves in two of the three losses," Scott said. "No doubt we could have done better."

Scott was also invited to participate in the college recruiters camp the day before the tournament.

Over 100 colleges and universities from around the country sent recruiters to evaluate the selected athletes.

"Tiffany put on an able display of her overall ability," Tiffany's father Mike said. "She was in the top category of hitters from what we observed."

Scott hit .656 for the Knights this year in the regular season and .727 in the post-season.

Aug. 1 is the final date to sign a national letter of intent for women's softball. Scott says if she doesn't sign by the deadline, she intends to walk-on to her school of choice.

"Hopefully, it will work out either way," Scott said. "Even if I have to redshirt a year, I'd prefer to do that for the team of choice rather than accept a lesser challenge."
