Local athletes compete in Frontier Challenge gymnastics meet

ANCHORAGE —Athletes from a pair of Mat-Su Valley gymnastics squads competed in Frontier Challenge at UAA on Feb. 16.

Valley clubs Excel Gymnastics and Denali Gymnastics were among the five-team field.

A pair of Denali Gymnastics athletes received all-around honors. Mackenzie Smith won the all-around category in the level 7A class after sweeping the vault, bars, beam and floor events.

Denali’s Kelsey Schoeber won the all-around in the level 7B class after finishing first in both the bars and the floor events.

Emily Brauneis led the Excel Gymnastics team with an all-around win in the level 6A class. Brauneis finished first in the bars and the beam events.

Mandi Gribble (level 6B beam), Katelyn Larimer (level 5C bars) and Katrina Morlock (level 5C beam) also posted first-place finishes.
