Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Shawna Matthews of Wasilla recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award that can be accomplished by a Girl Scout.
To complete the Gold Award, a senior Girl Scout must first earn seven other recognition’s that promote community service, career exploration, positive values and leadership skills. The final requirement is a service project that has a positive and lasting impact on the community and takes at least 50 hours to work. Matthews’ project was creating a web site of marine species at Normandy Park Cove on Puget Sound in Washington.
Prior to moving to Alaska two years ago, Matthews was a Girl Scout in Totem Council, Wash. She earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award and Silver Award during the time she was a Girl Scout in Washington.
Matthews is now actively involved in Senior Troop 907 in Wasilla.
Matthews is home-schooled and will be a senior this fall. She hopes to attend the University of Alaska at Fairbanks and become a marine biologist. She is the daughter of Bonnye Matthews of Wasilla.
