PALMER — Five wins and four shutouts equaled a tournament title for a local girls hockey squad.
The Alaska Pioneers of the Palmer-based Pioneer Amateur Hockey Association earned the championship at the Chicago Girls Winter Classic in Romeoville, Illinois, earlier this month.
Pioneers goalies Ashley Engan and Rachel Symmes combined to all only one goal in five games en route to the title. Engan posted the shutout in the championship game, a 3-0 win over Colorado Select. Coree Sanders, Jillian Schultz and Sydney Swanson scored goals for the Pioneers.
The Palmer squad opened its tourney with a 5-1 win over the Chicago Bruins. Bailey Brunnhoelzl notched the hat trick. Sanders and Jennifer Peterson also scored. Engan earned the win in goal.
The Pioneers followed with a 5-0 win over St. Jude. Garner scored twice. Brunnhoelzl, Josephine Monear and Briana Paxon added goals. Symmes scored the shutout.
Engan helped the Pioneers improve to 3-0 in the tournament with a 15-save shutout in a 1-0 win over Colorado Select. Olivia Bruno scored the lone goal for the Palmer team.
Symmes earned another shutout in a 5-0 win over the Waukesha Wolves. Swanson scored twice. Brunnhoelzl, Garner and Paxon added goals.
