Several local athletes are listed in the latest state wrestling rankings.
Chris Odom, Trevor Pempek and Jed Wade each hold the top spot in their respective weight class in the 4A rankings released last week.
The athletes are ranked by information supplied for coaches state wide and compiled by alaskawrestling.com, a local Web site that chronicles prep wrestling in the state.
Odom, who helped lead the Wasilla Warriors to a team title in the North South Tournament late last month, is ranked first in the 135-pound class.
Odom has scored close victories over the second-and third-ranked wrestlers, Homer's Monte Garroutte and Palmer's Zack Tomco, to win the North South Tourney and Bob Bailey Memorial individual titles.
Wade, a Wasilla senior, is ranked first in the 189-pound class. This season Wade is looking for his fourth state title and is also closing in on the state record for career wins.
Pempek represents the Moose with a first-place ranking in the 145-pound class. Pempek won individual titles at the Bob Bailey and North South tournaments with wins over second-ranked Dan Bailey and third-ranked Jake Savely.
Six local athletes are listed as second in the rankings.
Colony's Hollan Gravley is ranked second in the 112-pound class and teammate Dustin Killian is second at 119 pounds.
Gravely won his weight class at both the Bob Bailey and North South, and has yet to face the state's top-ranked wrestler in his class, Ketchikan's David Mann.
Four Warriors, Alan Bartelli (103), Jake Wade (171), John Olson (189) and Jeremie Miesler (275), are ranked second.
Jake Wade has lost a pair of heartbreakers this season, falling in overtime in the championship round of the Bob Bailey Invite and double overtime in the North South Tourney.
Miesler has won both tournaments he has wrestled in this year, but has not faced his division's top grappler, Ketchikan's Jon Hamilton, the defending state champion at heavyweight.
The lone Houston wrestler to be ranked is freshman Blake Elder, who is fourth in the 112-pound class.
Elder and the Hawks will participate in the Region III-3A tournament at Nikiski this weekend.
