Local judo team dominates championships

ANCHORAGE — Members of Mat-Su Judo spent plenty of time on the podium late last month.

Each of the 33 members of the local judo squad entered placed in the top 3 of the Alaska State Judo Championships at the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage on March 31.

Of the 33 competing, 11 were crown state champions, 14 finished second and eight finished third. Mat-Su Judo also scored a pair of team titles, winning the Saito Cup for the best five-person boys team and the Fukuda Cup for the top five-person girls team. Mat-Su Judo’s Jonathon Raynovic earned the Ricky Casquera Award, given to the most outstanding teenager in 2012. Teamate Lucus Thacker won the 2012 Rookie of the Year Award.

Nine teams from across the state participated in the 53rd annual meet.
