A team of National Junior Honor Society members from Wasilla Middle School decided to organize a food drive to benefit MY House as their community service project.

To kick off their project, students Amber Prosser, Madison Ressler, Autumn Johnson and Kennedie Goulding visited MY House and spoke with Outreach Program Coordinator Jay Dagenhart, who gave them a tour of the facilities and explained the mission of MY House.

The girls placed collection boxes and signs around their school and at a few local businesses, and enlisted the help of family members to collect canned goods and non-perishable foods for their project. They collected almost 700 individual items. The girls presented their donations to MY House Founder and Director Michelle Overstreet March 26.

According to its website, the goal of National Junior Honor Society, since its inception in 1929, is “to recognize outstanding middle level students.” NJHS serves to honors students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character.

An estimated 1 million students participate in official honor society activities. There are about 15 NHS and NJHS chapters in the Mat-Su Valley.
