Nearly 10 local youth cross-country skiers placed in the top 10 during the Besh Cup 3 and 4 Races last week in Fairbanks.
The group of athletes are part of the Mat-Su Nordic program, coached by Eric Strabel. Gabe Black and Raven Spangler led the club with runner-up finishes. Black was second in the boys U18 15-kilometer mass start, and Spangler was second in the boys U16 7.5-K mass start.
Banyan Smith and Jake Black placed fifth and eighth in the boys U16, and Weston Sensabaugh was ninth in the U18 class.
Mat-Su Nordic also had four place in the girls races. Elliott Sensabaugh was fourth and Isela Austin finished sixth in the girls U18 15-K mass start. Clara Sensabaugh was sixth and Kyndle Larousse was seventh in the girls U16 7.5-K mass start.
The events are part of the six-race Besh Cup series. Skiers earn points toward Federal International Ski and Snowboard rankings, which can help them qualify for competitions such as Arctic Winter Games and Junior Nationals.
