A group of local prep volleyball players were recently named to the All-Valley Volleyball Team.
Each of the six Mat-Su Borough School District programs that participated in intradistrict play landed two players on the first team and a pair on the second team. The first team includes senior Erica Pomrenke and Eliyah Pilgrim of the Colony Knights; seniors Leiah Rusher and Tiara Malidore of the Houston Hawks; seniors Talia Villnerve and MaKenzie Terwilliger of the Palmer Moose, juniors Lexi Seymore and Caprice Damon of the Redington Huskies; senior Kenna Grenier and sophomore Alana Barron of the Susitna Valley Rams;l and seniors Lily Hyce and Jada Schultz of the Wasilla Warriors.
Colony senior Hannah Duguid and sophomore Taylee Weiss; Houston senior Hannah Elson and junior Lorraine Fialelei; Palmer juniors Jenna Whisenhunt and Riley Thompson; Redington juniors Aubrianne Griffiths and Hailey Stoke; Susitna Valley juniors Myka Wilson and India Roderick; and Wasilla seniors Josi Schachle and Heidi Brewer were all named second-team.
Houston junior Kaitlyn Wentworth, Susitna Valley sophomore Birdie Pevan, Wasilla senior Sierra Baird and Wasilla junior Bella Hays were all named honorable mention.
The local volleyball programs were restricted to only competition within the district during the fall season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and district mitigation plans. The Alaska Schools Activities Association canceled the state volleyball championships due rising coronavirus numbers in Alaska, and local teams were also forced to end their seasons early. There was a plan to hold a Valley volleyball championships in early November, but intra-district play has been suspended since Oct. 13.
