Braddock, Larew thrill capacity crowd at GCI Summer Showdown

WASILLA -- Anchorage's Mike Braddock scored his second feature win of the season Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd during the GCI Summer Showdown at North Star Speedway.

Braddock took the lead with two laps to go after surviving an early fender bender. Braddock, driver of the NO. 19 legends car, continued to inch forward to the top of the standings with the win.

Other strong finishers in the legends division Saturday included Aaron Creech, Al Palma and points leader Mike Thomas. Female competitor Michelle Kyte's bad luck steak continued Saturday during the heats and feature. Kyte will look to stop the streak this Saturday as she defends her American Tire & Auto Alaska Legends Shoot-Out championship, won last year.

Thunder stock driver Eric Wittner scored his first career win during the four abreast action of the first heat in his Ford Thunderbird. Wittner, a rookie to auto racing, finished in the top five during the GCI Summer Showdownbehind Robert Tillery, David Retherford and Anchorage's Gary Keeling.

Chasing a feature win all season long Anchorage road race expert Lash Larew finally overcame second and third place finishes in the feature to take the win. Larew outran Dana Pruhs, Larry Theobald, and John Klayum in the closing laps to take the victory lap. David Houston and Larry Theobald shared wins in the heat races. The top four positions in the point standings shrunk closer together with the finishes. Houston, Larew, and Theobald remain just a few points away from leader John Klayum in his hunt for a second championship.

The GCI Summer Showdown concluded with an intense inner office race between GCI executives. Wilson Hughes, chief operating officer for GCI driving feature winner Mike Braddock's #19 GCI Legends car, led the early part of the race until he hit the turn four wall attempting to pass Gina Borland and Dick Westlund. The impact sent Hughes careening towards the infield with sparks and fiberglass debris in tow. Hughes was uninjured in the crash. Greg Jones held off the hard charging efforts of Paul Landes through lap traffic for the win and bragging rights. Jones was a lap down early but managed to get back on the lead lap for the win.

Racing continues this Saturday with the American Tire and Auto Alaska Legends Shoot-Out double elimination race, Tundra Thunder Triple Run, never attempted in Alaska "Faster Pastor" race and the wild and wacky SBS Plywood race.

Gates open at 4 p.m. racing starts at 6 p.m. Kids under 10 are free.
