Palma, Mutch rope in first checkers

WASILLA -- Drivers traded driving shoes for rain boots and umbrellas during a wet and soggy installment Full Throttle Saturday Night at North Star Speedway in Wasilla, Heavy rain showers early Saturday morning and standing water in the infield and pits, forced officials to cancel afternoon activities, including hot laps and qualifying. Drivers pulled pills to determine their starting positions in the first and second heats.

Anchorageâs Tim Mutch and Al Palma made the best of pill pulling Saturday. In his second year of competition Palma scored, his first win at North Star Speedway during the second heat of the Legends Division race over Doug Johnstone and Michelle Kyte. Rookie Tim Mutch did the same in the first heat for the Thunderstocks, sliding by Wasillaâs Kathryn Ramsay and Gary Keeling for the win.

Others winners Saturday included Theresa Page in the Mini Stocks winning both a heat race and Feature over Wasilla Toyota driver Mike Schwochert. Eddie Landes, Amanda Palma, and Robert Tillary squeezed their way to victories in the Bandolero division. David Retherford won the feature for the Thunderstocks after skidding through the infield mud avoiding a wreck.

John Klayum and Larry Theobald swapped paint for wins in the growing Baby Grand division out running Anchorageâs Dana Pruhs, Lash Larew, and Rod Rodriguez through slower lapped traffic.

Racing continues at North Star Speedway this Saturday and Sunday with ãArctic Rampageä Legends National Qualifier Event and Full Throttle Saturday Night. Saturday gates open at 3pm racing starts at 5. Then on Sunday gates open at 12pm racing begins at 2pm. Admission is $10 for adults and kids 10 and under are free.
