Local squads continue battle vs. non-conference foes

A pair of local teams are on the rebound this week, and two others look to continue a streak.

Palmer and Colony are both flying high after impressive victories last week. Palmer earned a key conference win over West Valley and Colony stormed past former rival

Soldotna.

Houston is looking to get over a devastating double-overtime loss to conference foe Seward, and Wasilla is still looking for that spark that will earn them a check in the win column.

West Valley @ Houston

The Hawks (1-1) earned the first lost of the year with a tough 6-0 loss in double-overtime to conference foe, Seward. Despite the loss, first-year varsity running back Matt Bertling continues to run strong. In a pair of games, Bertling has nearly 300 yards.

West Valley (0-2) is playing in their second non-conference game of the year. The winless Wolfpack surrendered 17 points in the fourth quarter and fell to Palmer 31-30 last week.

Skyview @ Wasilla

The Warriors (0-2) hope to finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with a win as they host the 3A Skyview Panthers.

Wasilla suffered breakdowns on both sides of the ball and will look to rebuild their confidence before they venture into a tough Northern Railbelt Schedule.

Jed Wade continues to lead the tribe on both sides of the ball.

Skyview (1-1) received a 51-0 beating at North Pole last week.

Palmer @ Juneau

The Moose (1-1), in the middle of a three-game road trip, will travel Juneau to take on the Bears.

Palmer took an early lead in the Northern Railbelt standings with a 31-30 come-from-behind victory over West

Valley.

Seniors Charlie Bentti and Mike Weber each scored a pair of touchdowns to lead in the victory. Defensive back Sam Zimmer returned a fumble for a touchdown to spark the second half comeback.

Juneau (2-0) notched a huge 42-18 win over East last week on the island. Junior running back Brian Felix rushed for 217 yards and two touchdowns.

Colony @ Kenai

The Knights (1-1) have already beaten the 3A state runner-up, now they would like to knock off the 3A state champ.

Colony defeated Soldotna 41-0 in Palmer last week and will face the Kenai Kardinals this week on the Peninsula.

Colony junior running back Shawn Olivera paced the Knights for 228 yards and three touchdowns.

Kenai (1-1) knocked off potential 4A state contender Lathrop in Fairbanks last week.
