Local swimming squads open season with Valley Quad

PALMER — Camille Dayton and Alexis Mattson helped the Colony Knights open the 2017 prep swimming season with a team title during the Valley Quad Aug. 19 at the Palmer Pool.

Dayton used wins in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly to help the Knights finished with 136 points in the girls’ team standings. Mattson finished first in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Max Snelders won twice for Palmer, which won the boys’ team title with 120 points. Snelders finished first in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Palmer’s Gretchen Snelders also won twice, placing first in the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Chloe Hartman (1 meter dive) and Savannah Geffken (500 freestyle) also won events for the Palmer girls, which finished second with 113 points.

Colony, which placed second in the boys standings, also had a double-winner. Gabe Verti finished first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Tanner Belliston (1 meter dive) and Jake Simmons (500 freestyle) also finished first for the Knights.

Koya Barrette led Wasilla with a win in the 100 backstroke. Cameron Hancock (50 freestyle) and Ben Henderson (100 freestyle) also scored wins for the WHS boys.
