WASILLA — Blake Dinkel already established himself as the top free throw shooter of his age division in Alaska. Now Dinkel is the best in the west.

Dinkel, 10, hit 22 of 25 free throws to win the west region of the Elks Hoop Shoot March 12 in Portland, Oregon. With the victory comes an invitation to the national event held in Chicago later this year. Dinkel, a fourth-grader with the Mat-Su Central homeschool program who plays for the local Valley Blaze basketball program, hit 17 of 25 free throws during the state competition in December of 2015.

Dinkel is one of two Valley youth basketball players who made the trip to Oregon for the regional event last week. Hannah Duguid, a 13-year-old Wasilla Middle School student who plays with the local Elevate basketball program, finished third in her age division at regions. Duguid hit 19 of 25 free throws. She won her division in Alaska, draining 22 of 25 shots.

Both athletes participated in the regional event in Oregon for the second straight year.
