Early Thursday morning, people glimpsing the skies near Lazy Mountain were greeted with a mysterious specter crossing the horizon.
People quickly took to social media to find answers.
“Aliens?!” “Plane crash?” “Are we being invaded?” Suspicion, non-scientific guesses and memes quickly took hold as discussions sprung up about what they had witnessed.
Theories abounded as to what it was people saw in the morning sky. While all in good fun, many were truly concerned that it had been an aircraft emergency and made calls about a possible plane crash in Lazy Mountain, or even a stray missile.
Late Thursday, the Alaska State Troopers had put out a statement addressing concerns he what might have been in the sky, trying to alleviate fears of a downed aircraft or rocket launch, stating there had been no indications of crash and deployment of a rescue team around the Lazy Mountain area, but found nothing.
“Further investigation revealed that a large commercial jet was flying in that area around the time that the photos and video were taken. The aircraft was contacted and reported normal flight operations on its way to JFK airport in New York. Troopers believe that the photos and videos showed a contrail from the commercial jet combined with the rising sun which together caused the unique atmospheric sight.”
According to NASA, contrails are a type of ice cloud, formed by aircraft as water vapor shrinks around small dust particles, which provide the vapor with enough energy to freeze. They can also form when water vapor from the airplane’s engines collide with the water vapor in the air.
So, just as pollution in the air can deliver breathtaking sunsets, it seems that the contrails combined with the condensation in the air and perfect atmospheric conditions, along with the sunrise gave viewers an impressive illusion to begin the day.
While this has satisfied most, there are still some skeptical of an alien cover-up or rocket launch. We may never really know…
