Lots of help make for a happy trail

To the editor:

A huge thank you to all the people and businesses that helped our students with Wasilla’s Historic Iditarod Walkabout Trail Project put in this spring from Tanaina Elementary to the Dorothy Page Museum.

The Bureau of Land Management provided GPS units to help us find the actual distance on the ground. The agency also provided expertise and our first five signs along the way that identify significant points from Seward to Nome on our route along Lucille Street and Nelson Avenue.

A big thank you to The Home Depot for donating posts for the trail signs. Thanks are also extended to Brandlen Tree Care and the city of Wasilla for donating trees to plant near our signs along the route.

A thank you is also extended to all of the city employees who helped so much in ensuring success of the project by supporting our efforts every step of the way. It is our hope that residents of Wasilla will walk this 2-mile, scaled-down replica of America’s last great gold rush trail and become more connected and interested in our local history.

Tanaina Elementary students and staff appreciate the generous community help provided to make this project possible.
