Lots on tap for seniors

To the editor:

An exciting schedule of activities is currently being initiated at the Wasilla Senior Center under the leadership of Pat Brown, well-known through the Valley as a former radio announcer.

In his plans, in addition to the usual offerings, he proposes “The Glass Journal,” a log of thankfulness and blessings; armchair travels through videos and personal experiences; a geriatric happy hour (non-alcoholic); a memory enhancing club featuring such games as Logic, Concentration, Wheel of Fortune, Scrabble and Sudoku.

Movie afternoons are currently on hold. Our big screen is broken and additionally requires VCR capability. WASI has a vast collection of video tapes, particularly of those good oldies. Concerts of recorded music are also possible. There will be a singalong one Friday evening per month, led by Lianne Schwartz. The first of these was a happy success.

Armchair sports are particularly enjoyable through the Wii device. One may get the thrill of playing golf, tennis, baseball, golf or bowling without serious exertion. Golfers and bowlers are already in motion, and as members sign up, tournaments will be arranged. Meanwhile, the machine is available for individual use in the activity room.

The Art Group and the Veterans meet every Wednesday. Pinochle and backgammon groups play daily, and bridge players are invited to form their own group. Game=players should note that there is a cabinet full of games and puzzles in the activity room as well as a library.

Pat is also checking possibilities for field trips to Valley places and events. Pat comes to us through a grant from MASST, an organization that arranges job retraining for the handicapped.
