ANCHORAGE — Dimond knocked a little sparkle off Wasilla’s Cinderella season Saturday, topping the defending state champion Warriors 54-47 in the championship game of the 2012 Lady Lynx Prep Shootout.
The loss was the Warriors’ first of the season and came on the heels of a 47-38 Wasilla over West Valley Friday to set up the tournament championship game.
Dimond took an early 14-12 lead after the first quarter, then shut down the Warriors usually potent offensive attack, outscoring the champs 16-6 in the second quarter to take a 12-point lead into the halftime break.
But Wasilla wasn’t ready to throw in the towel.
The Warriors rebounded in the third quarter, cutting the Lynx lead to a point going into the final stanza, but Dimond had enough to shut Wasilla down again.
Dimond’s Sierra Afoa led all scorers with 21 points.
Kyla Dinkel had a big night for Wasilla, scoring 18 points, while Alysha Devine and Alyssa Hutchins also hit double figures with 15 and 14.
Saturday’s loss came after 47-38 Friday win over West Valley.
Hutchins led the way for a balanced Wasilla offense with 12 points, followed by Devine with 9.
Hannah Mattson finished as the game’s top scorer for West Valley with 14.
Colony enjoyed the bus ride back from the Lady Lynx Shootout after finishing with a pair of wins.
The Knights topped Ketchikan 41-33 on Friday, then followed up with a defensively dominating effort Saturday against North Pole, 53-27.
Colony held the Patriots to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters while dissecting North Pole with a balance offensive attack that saw 10 of 11 Knights score, none in double-figures.
Jennifers Solano led the way with 9 points, followed by 8 each from Izzy Tweed and Jerica Nelson.
