WASILLA -- Derek Brewer won the battle of the first year coaches Friday night. Brewer's Dimond Lynx scored 32 first half points en route to a 39-6 win over Wasilla, spoiling Joe Gardner's debut as the head of the Warrior program.
The Warriors, who feature several new components on both sides of the ball, were outscored 32-0 in the first half.
"Part of it was first game stuff part of it was too many turnovers," Gardner said.
The Warriors turned the ball over five times, throwing three interceptions and losing two fumbles.
Dimond rushed for three touchdowns and scored on a 69-yard punt return in the first half to charge out to the giant lead.
A 72-yard return on the opening kickoff set up David Chadwick's first of three touchdown runs, and the Lynx took a 12-0 lead on the 69-yard punt return.
On a third Warrior special teams' miscue, Dimond recovered its own kickoff within the Wasilla 10-yard line. The play set up a Danny Moss 3-yard touchdown.
A Pasha Angel interception also set up a Dimond touchdown in the first half.
"The little things added up real quick," Gardner said.
Gardner said he was much more pleased with his team's second half effort.
"We turned it up and showed a little of what we needed to do," Gardner said.
Wasilla sophomore Jake Wade notched a 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to spoil Dimond's shutout bid. Wade and fellow running back Mason Richards combined for 98 yards rushing, finding most of their yardage in the second half.
Richards led the Warriors with 67 yards on 11 carries, while Wade had 31 yards on six tries.
Moss, Dimond's quarterback, led the Lynx with 99 yards on 14 carries. Chadwick had just 18 yards, but found the end zone three times.
Next week, Wasilla will travel to Kodiak for a non-conference match.
