PALMER -- After principals and staff provided ideas for a make-up schedule for days missed due to high winds on Jan. 7 and 8, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School Board voted last week to approve the proposed make-up days.
"This is a package deal," said district chief school administrator Bob Doyle. While there was no consensus from the staff on which days would be best for the make up, the package approved by the board appeared to have the most support.
The board amended the school year calendar in January in order to make up a missed school day due to heavy snows on Nov. 23, 2003. It changed the last day for students from June 1 to June 2, which also extended the two last working days for teachers by one day to June 3 and 4.
The new make-up schedule is multi-tiered, since middle school and high schools, with the exception of Glacier View and Su-Valley Jr/Sr High, had school called off on Jan. 8, while elementary schools, with the exception of Glacier View, Willow, Talkeetna and Trapper Creek, missed both Jan. 7 and 8 due to the high winds.
The new schedule for middle and high school students is as follows:
May 31 -- Holiday, no school
June 1 -- Regular school day
June 2 -- Regular school day
June 3 -- Last day for students
June 4 -- In-service day for teachers
June 5 -- Work day for teachers
New schedule for elementary schools:
May 31 -- Holiday, no school
June 1 -- Regular school day
June 2 -- Regular school day
June 3 -- Regular school day
June 4 -- Last day for students
June 5 -- In-service day for teachers
June 7 -- Work day for teachers
For each day of school missed, a day was added to the end of the school year. No students are required to come to school on Saturday, though teachers in both schedules will work Saturday, June 5. The district had considered having school during spring break, but the idea was not as popular since the additional school day would have been scheduled so close to the break, and most families already have spring break plans at this time.
