Making a splash during Alaska Aquatic Week

WASILLA -- Gov. Frank Murkowski recently proclaimed the week of July 18th Alaska Aquatic Week, in conjunction with National Aquatic Week. Murkowski encouraged Alaskans to celebrate the week by enjoying water-related recreation, whether it be splashing in the local swimming pool or enjoying the lakes, rivers and saltwater opportunities.

Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Tom Irwin encouraged everyone to recognize the inherent hazards of water activities. Alaska has one of the highest drowning statistics in the country.

"The governor's proclamation gives attention to aquatic recreation and that most water-related accidents are preventable," said Irwin in a press release Friday.

"We can reduce these risks with some basic water safety practices, such as closely supervising children and ensuring that anyone recreating in larger water environments wears a personal floatation device," Irwin said.

Along with swimming lessons, which are offered in most communities, the State Office of Boating Safety sponsors the Kids Don't Float program, which can be downloaded in Powerpoint form at the Web site http://chems.alaska.gov/Injury_Prevention/KidsDontFloat.htm.

The Office of Boating Safety also offers Alaska Water Wise, a basic eight hour course for Alaska boaters.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary offers many boating safety classes as well. Segments include pre-departure preparation, boating operation, boating emergencies, cold-water survival, the navigation rules of the road, and legal requirements.

Entire families are welcome to attend.

Students who attend all sessions, and pass the written exam and skills will be issued a course completion certificate.

"Even with these programs," said Jeff Johnson, of the Office of Boating Safety, "the ultimate responsibility for a safe, enjoyable aquatic recreation experience rests with each one of us."

In his executive proclamation, Murkowski said, "Aquatic activities can help us learn and grow, build self-confidence and improve physical fitness."
