While free on bail for assault and drug charges, a 26-year-old man was accused last week of nearly running down two children as he tried to escape police.
Arthur J. Steiner reportedly drew the attention of an Alaska State Trooper when Steiner failed to stop for a stop sign Thursday morning at the intersection of South Colony and the Glenn Highway, according to charging documents.
The trooper made a U-turn and went after Steiner, who reportedly sped up to 76 mph and continued south on the Glenn Highway.
Steiner did not slow down until he reached Moore Road, where he slid around the corner on the left side of the double yellow line at a high speed, the documents said.
Two boys standing at the corner waiting for a bus were forced to run out of the way to avoid being hit by Steiners truck, which came within 4 feet of where they had been standing, the documents said.
At the intersection of Moore Road and Helen Drive, Steiner allegedly pulled the truck to the left side of the road and ran, prior to surrendering to arrest.
Steiner had a breath-alcohol reading of .062 at 7:53 a.m., according to the documents a reading under the .100 legal limit.
He was arrested and charged with reckless driving, failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer and two counts of third-degree assault. At the time of the incident, Steiner was supposed to be in the presence of his third-party custodian as a bail condition of his earlier charges of third- and fourth-degree assault, criminal mischief and misconduct involving a controlled substance, according to court records.
At a hearing Friday, the judge said a new third-party custodian would have to be appointed before Steiner would be allowed to post bail again.
