Man charged after early-morning stabbing in Talkeetna

TALKEETNA — Alaska State Troopers say a fracas over a dog at a bar led to multiple stab wounds and felony assault charges.

According to a report Trooper Richard Chambers filed in Superior Court, officers were summoned to the Fairview Bar in Talkeetna at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Chambers writes that Joey Allen Girves, 41, of Anchorage, entered the bar with a dog.

“Patrons of the Fairview began confronting Girves about what they perceived to be very abusive behavior toward the dog,” Chambers wrote.

A woman, Katherine Stochosky, talked to Girves and offered to take the dog from him. He handed it over outside and went back into the bar. Chambers writes that 30 seconds later, Girves was back outside.

“Witnesses stated that an unprovoked Girves pushed Stochosky in the chest with two open hands then punched Stochosky in the left shoulder, causing pain,” Chambers wrote.

That’s when the Stochosky’s boyfriend, Conner Germain, stepped in and a shoving match ensued, the report says. Germain wound up on the ground with Girves. The boyfriend got the upper hand and pinned Girves down. The report implies the Germain didn’t see Girves’ knife.

“He felt something sharp being stuck into his abdomen and chest,” Chambers wrote.

Several bar patrons then intervened, separated the two and pinned Girves to the ground until troopers arrived.

Chambers reports that troopers seized a locking folding knife covered in blood someone in the crowd had taken from Girves. Germain had stab wounds to the abdomen and mid-torso and was taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center for treatment.

As for Girves, he was jailed without bail at the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility, charged with multiple counts of assault. Thursday afternoon, jail records listed him as still incarcerated.
