Man charged with rape of former girlfriend

PALMER — A 26-year-old man is facing serious charges after Palmer police say he raped a woman June 13.

According to an affidavit officer Shayne La Croix filed in court, the case began at 11:11 p.m. when the woman called police to say Kevin Joseph Edwards had raped her.

The woman told police that she had been in a relationship with Edwards previously, which she had ended because he was too controlling. Edwards started texting her in May, asking to get together and to have sex. She told him they could hang out but there wouldn’t be sex.

On June 13 they two finally got together for a drink at the woman’s house. Edwards immediately started kissing her and she pushed him away. Then he opened a can of pre-mixed Long Island iced tea and tried to pour it into her mouth.

“She stopped him and told him she could drink it on her own,” La Croix writes. “After about one and a half drinks she was feeling flushed and realized that Edwards had hardly consumed any of his drink.”

That’s when Edwards started in again with the kissing. She tried to stop him again but he pushed her down, held her head down and raped her.

La Croix writes that a subsequent sexual assault exam revealed injuries “consistent with rough or violent sex.”

On June 14 La Croix brought Edwards in for questioning.

“He said that (the woman) seemed to enjoy the act, and she never said no, to stop or tried to fight him. He said as far as he knew the act was consensual,” La Croix writes.

The officer writes that he then offered Edwards the opportunity to take a lie detector test, which he did on June 18.

“During the polygraph, Edwards was asked several times if the sex he had with (the woman) was consensual. Edwards stated it was, but showed deceitfulness every time,” La Croix writes.

In a third interview, Edwards confessed, La Croix writes.

“He said he was angry about not having control in his life and even though (she) told him they would not have sex, he decided at that point he was going to take control and have sex with (her),” La Croix writes.

Edwards was arrested and charged with a single count of first-degree sexual assault. The charge is an unclassified felony and therefore in the same category as murder, carrying a sentence of between 20 and 99 years in prison.

At his first hearing June 19 his bail was set at $50,000 and he was ordered to find a third party to watch him before he can be released. As of Monday afternoon he was listed as an inmate at the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility.
